[Lecture] On metal fatigue

Speaker:Dr. Yanyao Jiang, Professor, University of Nevada, Reno, USA

Time:09:00, July 14, 2023, GMT+8

Venue:Room 218, A1 Building, State Key Laboratory of Rail Transit Vehicle System, Jiuli Campus, Southwest Jiaotong University

Abstract:

Metal fatigue became a significant engineering problem after the industrial revolution with the use of the steam engines particularly in railways. Despite all the knowledge and advance resulted from the fatigue research of over 170 years, unintended fatigue failures continue to occur. More fatigue researches are needed, and for engineering applications, more important is education. The speaker will share some of his experience in the fatigue related research and a general perspective of fatigue research and its engineering applications. The discussions will range from unsolved problems in fatigue research to the current applications of metal fatigue knowledge in engineering design and evaluation. With a long association of the speaker with the Southwest Jiao Tong University, the talk will highlight the stress and fatigue analyses in rail-wheel rolling contact.

Biography:

Yanyao Jiang received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Northeast University in China in 1983, M.S. degree in Solid Mechanics from the Zhejiang University in 1996, and Ph.D. degree in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993. Professor Jiang has been studying cyclic plasticity, fatigue and fracture, rolling contact, and durability of bolted joints. His research work has led to an understanding of the relationship between cyclic plasticity and fatigue failure. His approach for crack growth predictions bridges the crack initiation stage and the crack growth stage in fatigue research. Professor Jiang is an ASME Fellow. He was the recipient of the US NSF CAREER award, the Ford University Research Program, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fraunhofer Bessel Research Award, and the Joint Research Fund for Overseas Chinese Young Scholars from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He served as an Associate Editor of the ASMEJournal of Engineering Materials and Technologyand is a member of the Editorial Board for theInternational Journal of Plasticityand theInternational Journal of Fatigue.
